Wi-Fi warehouse: zero dead zone

Logistics warehouse with operators and professional Wi-Fi connected scanners

A scanner that loses signal. An AGV that stops in the middle of the aisle. An operator waiting for the connection to return to validate a preparation order. In a warehouse, a thirty-second Wi-Fi cut can disrupt an entire operational chain and cost much more than one might imagine.

Yet, wireless networks often remain the neglected aspect of logistics infrastructure. Investments are made in shelving, handling equipment, WMS systems — and Wi-Fi is deployed "last", almost as an afterthought. This is a mistake.

A warehouse is a naturally hostile Wi-Fi environment

Unlike an office or a commercial space, a warehouse accumulates all the conditions that complicate the propagation of radio waves:

  • Metal shelving reflects and absorbs the signal. Depending on their height, density, and orientation, they create unpredictable shadow areas that can only be accurately identified through a site study.

  • Ceiling height changes everything. A warehouse with a 12-meter peak does not cover like a warehouse with 6 meters. The placement of access points, the angle of antennas, the transmission power — everything must be calculated according to the actual geometry of the building.

  • Sectional doors and loading docks are critical transition areas. A vehicle or operator moving between inside and outside must maintain their connection without interruption.

  • Device density can be very high during peak times: scanners, tablets, mobile terminals, AGVs, IoT sensors, surveillance cameras… All share the same radio network.

What truly depends on your Wi-Fi

In a modern warehouse, the wireless network is no longer a convenience — it’s a critical infrastructure. Here’s what runs on it in real-time:

  • Scanners and preparation terminals: every picking validation, every receipt of goods goes through the network.

  • AGVs and mobile robots: their navigation and movement instructions rely on a stable, low-latency connection.

  • The WMS (Warehouse Management System): stock data, mission orders, shipping confirmations — everything runs in real-time.

  • Surveillance and access control: systems often overlooked in network sizing, but which consume significant bandwidth.

Just one dead zone in an operator's or AGV's route is enough to create a bottleneck.

What a Wi-Fi audit concretely changes

Before installing any access points, a professional Wi-Fi audit allows you to:

  • Map the building: identify materials, heights, potential sources of interference (motors, industrial frequencies, neighboring networks).

  • Simulate coverage on a plan: define the exact number of access points required, their optimal locations, and their configuration before any physical intervention.

  • Anticipate changes: a warehouse that will accommodate additional AGVs or a new storage area must be able to adapt its network without a complete overhaul.

  • Validate the deployment on-site: after installation, a site measurement confirms that coverage, capacity, and roaming meet operational requirements.

The result: a network designed for your warehouse, not a generic network adapted afterwards.

Does your warehouse have a Wi-Fi network that meets the demands of your operations?
